The aim of the European Union’s R&I activities is to invest in growth and to secure the EU’s position in the accelerating global competition. The EU works to develop a favourable operating environment for R&D activities by, for instance, removing obstacles to cross-border research collaboration. The aim is that the national and regional R&I policies and EU actions will support each other, thus generating potential for an open internal market for research, that is, the European Research Area (ERA).
The Academy of Finland actively engages in EU activities as a science policy expert, research funding agency and national authority. We actively contribute to building the European Research Area and Horizon 2020 as well as to implementing their goals.
The Academy and Business Finland have a joint liaison office in Brussels in order to monitor developments in EU research and innovation policy.
