The European Commission and Science Europe have today published Plan S, an initiative which aims at accelerating the transition to full and immediate open access to scientific publications.

Following the initiative by the Open Access Envoy and further development by Science Europe, eleven major European research funders, such as UK Research and Innovation, the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research and the Research Council of Norway, have formed the alliance cOAlition S to take action towards the implementation of Plan S. In this effort they are joined by the European Commission and the European Research Council.

Plan S presents ten principles for planning and operationalising open access to achieve full and immediate open access for research publications funded by public grants after 1January 2020. Read more about Plan S.

The Academy of Finland supports Plan S. The Academy acknowledges planned joint actions by research funders and the need for further international cooperation paving the way towards the vision of science without publication paywalls.

Riitta Maijala, Vice President for Research, said: “The Academy of Finland believes that joint actions by research funders and the scientific community can significantly change the situation. Such actions can foster an environment where full open access to scientific publications will be easy and economically feasible for researchers without concerns about the quality or credibility of the platform.”
