New Academy of Finland Board, research councils and Strategic Research Council appointed
On 23 June 2021, the Finnish Government appointed a new board for the Academy of Finland, members to the Academy’s research councils and a new Strategic Research Council for the period 1 January 2022–31 December 2024.
Professor Johanna Myllyharju (University of Oulu) will continue as chair of the Academy Board.
The members of the Board are Research Director Essi Eerola (VATT Institute for Economic Research), Professor Klaus Elenius (University of Turku), Chief Technology Officer Atte Haapalinna (Okmetic Oy), Professor Martti Kauranen (Tampere University) and Professor Kirsi Tirri (University of Helsinki).
Professor Jussi Kukkonen (University of Eastern Finland) was appointed as chair of the Research Council for Biosciences, Health and the Environment, Professor Petri Karonen (University of Jyväskylä) as chair of the Research Council for Culture and Society and Professor Leena Ukkonen (Tampere University) as chair of the Research Council for Natural Sciences and Engineering.
Anu Kaukovirta, Vice President for Production Systems at Natural Resources Institute Finland, was appointed as chair of the Strategic Research Council.
The Board of the Academy of Finland decides the general policies and objectives of the Academy. The Board’s task is to coordinate the work of the research councils, the Strategic Research Council and the Finnish Research Infrastructure Committee.
The Academy’s research councils provide funding for scientific research and the development and utilisation of framework conditions for research and monitor the impact and effectiveness of the funding.
