Research Council of Finland boosts international research cooperation in high-performance computing

20 Dec 2024

The Research Council of Finland (RCF) has granted funding for twelve research projects within a scheme that supports international collaboration in high-performance computing. The total funding, granted for the period 2025–2027, comes to around 7 million euros.

The funding supports the use of EuroHPC’s high-performance computing resources and the LUMI supercomputer within the framework of international research collaboration. The funding will be used to develop a versatile future computing ecosystem and to expand computing expertise in Finland and globally.

The funded projects focus in particular on computational science and computational data analysis. In addition, the projects will conduct research in areas such as geosciences, medicine, pharmacy, physics, chemistry and computer science, as well as climate research, atmospheric sciences, meteorology, astronomy and environmental sciences.

The RCF’s special funding for high-performance computing is based on Finland’s strategic international partnerships with US, British and Japanese partners in areas such as digitalisation, artificial intelligence, sustainable development and the green economy. The aim of the partnerships is to advance international research excellence and new technologies, create jobs and boost competitiveness.

The funded projects promote scientific innovation and diversification, the quality of research as well as scientific and societal impact.

Professor Johanna Myllyharju, Chair of the RCF General Subcommittee, which decided on the funding, said: ”The selected projects form a broad array of research rated as being of high quality by international standards. They represent an encouragingly large number of Finnish universities and other research organisations. The range of international partners is also very impressive.”
