Research Council of Finland’s support to researchers who have fled from Ukraine to Finland totals more than €5m

13 Dec 2024

Between 2022 and 2024, the Research Council of Finland has organised four funding calls with a view to supporting researchers who have fled Ukraine and come to Finland. The funding totals 5.4 million euros.

The funding has required active participation from Finnish researchers. They have invited researchers from Ukraine to Finland to conduct research and have committed to assisting the invitees with arrangements and issues related to settling in Finland.

The RCF funding has been granted to the ‘sites of research’ of the Finnish inviting researchers, that is, to the host universities. A total of 55 researchers have been supported with the funding. The funding is intended to cover the travel and living expenses of the researchers during their visit in Finland. Most of the visits are two-year spells.

The funding is subject to the requirement that the invitees have obtained a doctoral degree and are prevented from working in Ukraine because of the Russian attack.

The RCF does not publish the names of the Finnish inviters and the invitees from Ukraine to ensure that their safety is not compromised.

The RCF is also involved in the preparation of a Ukraine-ERA-Net call and will continue to support Ukrainian science and research in the framework of European cooperation.
